Apology to subscribers

Hi all,

I gather that whenever I add an old book review post to this site, you guys are getting an email.  I’ve checked with wordpress, and there doesn’t seem to be any way to switch this off from my end.  And I’m afraid I’m not even halfway through yet, so there is going to be a lot more Cate Speaks spam coming through your inbox in the next few days.

My best suggestion, if this is driving you mad, is that you unsubscribe for the next week or so, by which time I truly hope I will be done (I truly hope I will be done by the end of this week, frankly), or just keep an eye out for a post here wrapping up the Victorian Election, because that will be the sign that I’m done with adding historical book review posts.

Apologies for the inconvenience, I can imagine that this is very frustrating.

There ought to be a link in the bottom of your email that takes you to where you can unsubscribe – I’m not sure if you will find yourself subscribed to catespeaks.com or to catespeaks.wordpress.com, so if you can’t find your subscription to the first, check the second.

Edited to add: OK, I’m done for now.  At some later date, I’ll incorporate my Goodreads reviews, but there are far fewer of them, and I’ll give you a heads-up before I get started!  Thank you for your patience.

It’s not a problem about all the reviews Cate. I’m sliding them all over to my ‘Arts’ folder to look at later, at my leisure. But I would like some clarification: who is Hugo, and why are we interested in what he is reading? And who decides what Hugo will read?

Ha! I forget that not everyone reads genre fiction! (When I’m not reading non-fiction, it’s genre all the way for me, and the more escapist the better! There’s enough to be depressed about in the real world.)

So, the Hugo Awards are the annual Science Fiction and Fantasy Awards, which are voted on at WorldCon, which is the biggest (or one of the biggest) Science Fiction and Fantasy Conventions in the world. They are held in a different city every year and I’ve never actually managed to get to one, other than the one I sneaked into by baking pavlova and lamingtons for two authors I knew online and taking them on a tour of Melbourne… But for the last few years, I’ve taken out a supporting membership, which allows me to vote on the various finalists (and also to nominate works, though I’m less good at that part).

At which point… well, you know how I feel about informed voting! So naturally I have to read every single thing on the ballot, regardless of whether it is to my taste. I do usually discover some amazing authors that way, which is always good!

(And… look, I only started doing this in 2016, which was when the awards were in the middle of a gigantic political ruckus, with a lot of ‘stacking’ of nominations – google Rabid Puppies if you want the full story – so most of my reviews for that year are ‘oh, ick, what am I even reading here?’, so you might not find much use in them!)

I used the ‘unsubscribe’ link yesterday to limit emails to one digest per day. With luck that should fix the problem!

An excellent plan! I’m nearly done, at this point – hope to finish this evening, after which posting levels will return to normal!
